Seize the Clay Ceramics Workshop at MOCA
Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.
Because of the nature of working with ceramics, all pieces built in class will need to dry and then be bisque fired in our kiln. To glaze your piece after it has been bisque fired, you will need to register for a second class. Glazing is not required, and pieces can be painted or glazed at home.
A kiln firing of one small piece completed in a workshop is included for each class attended, either a bisque fire or final fire.
Students may contact the museum to pick up their work no sooner than one week following their class.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Ivy Ton is a tattooer and multimedia artist based in Jacksonville, FL. Their art emerges at the intersection of their two favored mediums: ceramics and tattooing. During their early years exploring these two mediums, the immediate results were wheel-thrown dinnerware and vases embellished with American traditional tattoo inspired designs. While still incorporating these traditional styles and methods, Ivy's process has evolved beyond simply painting a design onto a round clay body. Hand building allows them to move away from traditional wheel-throwing and advance beyond the limitations in shapes and forms offered by the pottery wheel in favor of more organic forms that take on a life all their own. At present, Ivy works as a full-time artist at Mister Tattoo and teaches wheel-throwing at Atlantic Pottery Supply.

MOCA's Ceramics Open Studio is for ceramicists looking for a place to create and connect with peers. Ceramics Open Studio hours take place in a MOCA workshop equipped with throwing wheels and a range of tools available to students. Work during these hours is self-directed and all clay and glaze should be brought by the student. Registration includes 1 kiln firing for a single piece under 10lbs. At this time only low fire clay and glaze can be fired in MOCA’s kilns.
