Mastering the Mix (Age 14-17)

*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 07/30/2021
Dive deep into the technical and production side of music creation this summer! If you've ever been confused about how to use EQ, compression, the difference between algorithmic and convolution reverb, and how to route audio through a mixing board (virtual or real), then this is for you! Even if you've never asked yourself those questions but have an interest in taking your music to the next level (or learning the fundamentals of mixing and editing others' projects), it's also for you!

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Please note, this is not a songwriting class, it is for those interested in how to mix live recorded and virtual instrument tracks, taking the raw working pieces of a song and moving towards a finished product that is suitable for distribution on digital platforms. Basic tracking/mixing methods will be mentioned but the main focus is on mixing and editing. Jason, a certified music nerd who studied Experimental Electro-Acoustic music, brings his background in psycho-acoustics and a love of software to the class. Students will work inside Reaper during the workshop, but the skills and mixing theory learned will be applicable to any DAW software or mixing environment. Co-sponsored with Higher Ground Learning.

This is an online class. You must have a laptop/computer and download the software. Your computer must be capable of running Reaper (it works on most PCs and Macs unless they're very old)! Students will also need a pair of headphones for the class (any headphones will do, but those with a mic are preferred). Software download instructions will be provided the week before class begins (Reaper has a generous free trial period and is relatively inexpensive if a student eventually decides to purchase a full license).
