First-ever VIRTUAL July 4th Celebration from The National Archives Foundation

Join the National Archives for its first-ever virtual July 4th celebration! For 50 years, the Archives has celebrated the founding of the United States that includes a traditional reading ceremony of the Declaration of Independence on the Museum steps. This year, the National Archives will lift the words of the Declaration of Independence off of its well-worn parchment paper and bring them to homes across the country online, while providing a host of educational activities for the whole family.

With a host of online programming, educational opportunities, and a special presentation of the traditional reading ceremony, this Independence Day will be as patriotic as ever. Stay tuned for more details on our website for programming and how to log on for the day of celebration!

11 a.m. - 12 p.m. ET

Welcome remarks from the Archivist of the United States, David S. Ferriero followed by a discussion with Thomas Jefferson. The founding father will cover the Declaration of Independence and participate in a Q&A with National Archives Foundation Executive Director Patrick Madden.

The Q&A will be followed by a recorded session with the National Archives Education team that will discuss more about the Archives, Charters of Freedom, and the Rotunda. The Faulkner Mural of the Declaration of Independence will also be discussed and linked to coloring activities.

12 - 1 p.m. ET

Abigail Adams discusses her experiences during the Revolution and the important role women played during the founding of the nation, followed by Q&A with National Archives Foundation Executive Director Patrick Madden.

Guests will learn about a windsock making activity from the National Archives Education team as well as special patriotic symbols and the American Revolution.

1 - 2 p.m. ET

John Dunlap discusses the printing of his famous copies of the Declaration now known as the Dunlap Broadside, followed by a Q&A with National Archives Foundation Executive Director Patrick Madden.

Guests will also participate in a DocsTeach Comparison Activity between the Dunlap Broadside and the original Declaration of Independence. The Education team at the National Archives discusses the various copies of the Declaration on view at the Archives.

Join us for a discussion with Dorothy Hancock as she covers her role in the Revolution as well as that of her husband John Hancock. The discussion will be followed by a Q&A with National Archives Foundation Executive Director Patrick Madden.

Join famous children's author Brad Meltzer and famous illustrator Chris Eliopoulos as they talk about their Ordinary People Change the World book series. They will take questions and Chris will show kids some fun interactive drawing activities.

Tune in for a new production of the traditional reading ceremony, hosted and narrated by Soledad O'Brien. This year, the National Archives will lift the words of the Declaration of Independence off of its well-worn parchment and bring them to homes across the country online.
